Red in general- one of my biggest pet peeves in songs is when artists use similes or metaphors in their work. There not righting an English essay or right a sonnet, so why? .Most metaphorical references used are comple tely idiotic and not even relevant to the subject matter their actually singing about. so when I first heard red was just one big metaphor it wanted to smash my head against the desktop/wall where ever I was at that moment because literally every single line was a metaphor/simile. His love is like trying to find solve a crossword puzzle when there’s no right answer what!? Seriously what has your love of word-related games got to do with your relationship and who writes a crossword puzzle without a definitive correct answer argh blasphemy! . We are never ever getting back together- really Taylor? I never ever wanted to listen to your music again after hearing this three minute long rant about your ex. Jake Gyllenhaal heard the song enough times and im pretty sure he doesn’t care, elongating your vowels is giving both of us a headache also a accidentally recorded conversation is not a basis for a song neither is the phrase never say never. . I knew you were trouble- I c an’t deny its catchy but the autotune and -im not going to say it’s dubstep because it’s not- the SLIGHT dance/dupstep element is different form her usual protocol but doesn’t work with Taylor’s high pitched voice and make her sound like she trying too hard and the repetitive use of the word trouble does not make up for actual lyrics *side note* if you’ve seen the music video to this song its borderline hilarious, the edgy look doesn’t agree with her. . I’ll follow you, follow you home- if that doesn’t say stalker I don’t know what does You’ve redeemed yourself yay! . State of grace- this i s one of my absolute favorite tracks on the album. Just listening to it is a delight to my ears. it transports me to the bustling streets of the vivid and restless New York (don’t know why just does) it has influences of rock bond u2, with the electric guitar undertones and angelic backing vocals which make it magic and lines like just twin fire signs, four blue eyes make it all round perfection.*side note*acoustic version of state of grace is quiet enchanting . Lucky one- Im a lucky one to hear this musical excellence, it has the same inde/rock vibe to this track as well making it refreshing to hear, something else that is refreshing to hear is that it not about a failed romance -thank the lord- I really appreciate the message in this one than any of the others in this album. it’s about fear of not being satisfied with the things you already have achieved in so far it ruins the joy of living and turn simple, wonderful things into hard work because it a game of stayin g relevant enough to be important afraid of being replaced with younger, better version of ourselves. .So casually cruel in the name of being honest- A concept I can relate to two points for Taylor .Treacherous- I can’t fault the melody its seductive but pure, its slow but not drown your sorrows depressing the use of a single, acoustic guitar to build up to a full entourage of drum beats is fantastic. .Everything has changed- ED SHEEREN!! Yes the wonderful and talented fiery-haired Londoner Ed Sheeren co-wrote with Taylor on this track to produce legitimate candy for your ears. The drums build up the choruses paired fluently with the breaks of the guitar solos in-between accompanied only Ed’s and Taylor’s super-sweet vocals creating a heavenly, musical power duo in the making. .The last time- Gary Lightbody and Taylor swifts duet is the definition of complimentary. Lightbody is a fantastic choice for a duet partner as it enhances Taylor’s vocals and bri ngs a more soulful and mature side to her tone. â€Å"The last time â€Å"paints an almost palpable picture of a young man and woman insanely in love with each other only separated by the door that prevents them from their own destruction, told through the harrowing backing of the piano. Red has sold over 4 million copies worldwide and i greatly hope that its success continues. Hastings Banda, Life President of Malawi Continued from: Hastings Banda: the Early Years After an extra-ordinary but altogether unassuming life as an ex-patriot black African doctor in Britain during the colonial era, Hastings Banda soon became a dictator once in power in Malawi. His contradictions were many, and he left people wondering how the doctor had become Hastings Banda, Life President of Malawi. Extremist: Opposing Federation and Supporting Apartheid Even while abroad, Hastings Banda was being drawn into nationalist politics in Nyasaland. The tipping piont seems to have been the decision by the British colonial government to join Nyasaland with Northern and Southern Rhodesia to form the Central African Federation. Banda was vehemently against federation, and several times, nationalist leaders in Malawi asked him to return home to lead the fight. For reasons that are not completely clear, Banda remained in Ghana until 1958, when he finally returned to Nyasaland and threw himself into politics. By 1959, he had been jailed for 13 months for his opposition to federation, which he saw as a device for ensuring that Southern Rhodesia – which was governed by a white minority – retained control over the majority black populations of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland.   In Africa Today, Banda declared that if opposition made him an â€Å"extremist†, he was happy to be one. â€Å"Nowhere in history,’ he said, â€Å"did the so-called Moderates accomplish anything.†Ã‚   Yet, despite his stance against the oppression of Malawis population, as a leader Banda had too few qualms, many people thought, about the oppression of South Africas black population. This juxtaposition between his self-proclaimed extremism and the  real politique  of his international rule was just one of the many contradictions that confused and bewildered people about President Hastings Banda. Prime Minister, President, Life President, Exile As the long awaited leader of the nationalist movement, Banda was an obvious choice for Prime Minister as Nyasaland moved toward independence, and it was he who changed the name of the country to Malawi. (Some say he liked the sound of Malawi, which he found on a pre-colonial map.)   It was soon evident how Banda intended to rule. In 1964, when his cabinet tried to limit his powers, he had four of the ministers dismissed. Others resigned and several fled the country and lived in exile for the rest of their lives or his reign, which ever ended first.   In 1966, Banda oversaw the writing of a new constitution and ran unopposed for election as Malawis first president. From then forward, Banda ruled as an absolutist. The state was him, and he was the state. In 1971, the parliament named in President for Life. As President, Banda enforced his rigid sense of morality on the people of Malawi. His rule became known for oppression, and people feared his paramilitary Malawi Young Pioneers group.   He supplied the largely agrarian population with fertilizer and other subsidies, but the government also controlled prices, and so few but the elite benefited from surplus crops. Banda believed in himself and his people, though. When he ran in a contested, democratic election in 1994, he was shocked to be roundly defeated. He left Malawi, and died three years later in South Africa. A Fraud or a Puritan? The juxtaposition of Bandas demeanor as the quiet doctor in Britain and his later years as a dictator, combined with his inability to speak his native language inspired a number of conspiracy theories. Many thought he was not even from Malawi, and some claimed that the real Hastings Banda had died while abroad, and been replaced by a carefully chosen imposter.    There is something fiery about most puritanical people though. Yet pride when used properly is the right antidote against self pity and the loss of identity. Confidence, self concept, and decisiveness all come from personal identity. When a person knows what he can do and what he can be, the more likely that he can be successful in his chosen field or profession. Self-concept begets him the inspiration to do something he can despite his inadequacies as a person. A strong self-concept allows a person to appreciate what he has, revert to his own self, and create something good out of the changes in him. Thus, one should strive to make a positive self concept to bear a positive identity. Despite the Odds This is the premise of Alice Walker’s Beauty When the Other Dancer is the Self. Alice, who became blind upon an accident which she decided to keep forever, lost her identity. Used to the fact that she was the cute little girl everybody admired, she was devastated to learn that her blindness changed the whole of her. Zora was black and grew up in a black neighborhood. Moving into the white’s world startled her a bit, but little had she felt that she is different from others. She knew she is colored, but she never felt it affected her substantially. Typically, an ordinary individual will create a comfort zone on the place he grew up in, and the things that she was used to do. Zora dispelled this. She knew she had to break the barriers of her comfort zone to achieve her goals. She knew that being stifled by her difference is the worst mistake she can do. And so she defied the conventions and enriched her uniqueness instead of focusing on her difference. Nancy Mairs had the same concepts. Being suddenly crippled by multiple sclerosis, Mairs found herself trapped in a situation no one will ever want but she. But Mairs was wise. She transformed her ordeal to a milestone by getting inspiration from her condition to write a piece that will both honor her condition, her newfound strength, and to inspire the many other that are in the same situation as she is. A State of Mind Searching for and finding one’s personal identity can be a positive experience for a person when the end result is a positive one. However, finding a positive identity can also be dependent on one’s view of oneself and of the occurrences in his life. A positive view of oneself is a state of mind. When one sees the good in his life and his person, despite all the bad, finding an identity can be an enriching and inspiring experience not only for himself but also for the others. The state of mind is an important aspect that every person must develop. Truly it will be hard to prepare oneself from the unexpected, but preparations are less needed as compared to reason and sound thinking. When a person can decide quickly and save himself from the psychological miseries that destiny can bring, he is a better person that the one who thoroughly prepares for the unexpected that can happen. It is by seeing the positive in one’s shortcomings that one can be truly at peace with oneself. In effect, making peace with the self can bring forth bounty because it defies all the negative energy that bad impression of self brings. It is only through inner peace that one can truly appreciate his abilities and usefulness. Through this can one be truly productive. Hidden Truths We all have our perceptions of ourselves. As with our three authors, some self concepts can be positive, some negative. While it is prescriptive to make a positive self concept, life still can be filled with surprises. As learned by Wayson Choy, there are truths in our own selves waiting to be uncovered despite all our efforts to create the most truthful self image and personal identity. These hidden truths can be squarely unfair. For Choy for instance, as he recounted in his Ten Thousand Things, the hidden truth was that the parents he knew all his life were not his own parents. As if the truth was not painful enough, his uncovering of the truth was set at the time when his parents are already dead. As a complete orphan there were only two aunts to ask, and confirm, what an interviewer revealed to him: he is an adopted. Like Zora, the revelations shattered his comfort zone a bit. The revelation was so sudden that despite the progressive turn of event it still surprised him. He prepared himself for the worst, but when the worst came he was still unprepared. Yet Choy is wise enough to accept the truth and re-create himself from that truth. This shows that every condition is a positive one when one’s state of mind is positive. Acceptance can make one get used to a condition however negative it can be. Conclusion Personal identity is important. It creates a person—his thoughts, his feelings, his whole self. Thus, it is important that one’s self concept is agreeable to him. A negative perception of self affects a person negatively. When a person feels pressured with problems and self pity, he tends to focus his strengths into his negative thoughts and will find less time and energy into transforming his ideas into tangible results. As much as identity creates a person, a person equally creates his personal identity. Self concept is a fruit of one’s view of the events that occur in his lifetime. When a person perceives the negative as challenges to overcome rather than problems that interfere to one’s goals, he gives himself a chance to use these interferences positively and this will affect him positively as well. It will be healthy for a person to nurture a positive self concept and create a unique identity inspired by his difference as compared to others. He can use these to increase his productivity and capabilities, the products of which benefits himself, others, and improves his sense of self and others perception of him.
